In the Josef Word editor, cross references display in documents as **green variables**. 2. Builders can **[insert variables](https://help.joseflegal.com/creating-a-document-in-the-web-editor?hsLang=en)**, **[apply rules](https://help.joseflegal.com/creating-a-document-in-the-word-editor?hsLang=en)**, **[looping](https://help.joseflegal.com/looping-logic?hsLang=en)** etc. to blocks featuring cross-references. 3. Builders can also quickly delete cross-references by hitting the backspace key. 4. Tables of contents may not appear in the Josef Word editor, but rest assured that they do in generated documents! 5. It is **not possible** to add new cross-references in the Josef Word editor. Therefore, we recommend either - Finalising your document's cross-references in Microsoft Word before uploading it to Josef, or - Using Josef's **[export & re-upload](https://help.joseflegal.com/export-re-upload-documents-beta?hsLang=en)** (beta) feature to export and edit your document in Microsoft Word (i.e. insert new cross-references), then re-upload your document back onto Josef. Once your document's cross-references have been finalised, simply generate a document by **[testing your bot](https://help.joseflegal.com/testing-a-bot?hsLang=en)** and that's it! Cross-references and tables of contents in your generated documents will be in line with the automations applied and responses inputted by end-users.
